Feature Preview: Enhancements to Proposing Changes using Issues

Please enjoy this sneak peek of an upcoming, major enhancement to the way changes are proposed to metadata items in the Aristotle Metadata Registry!

What’s new?

The enhancements to proposing changes come in the form of a new, more extensive interface for suggesting changes to metadata items.

In the past, change requests have only allowed users to suggest changes to the following elements of a metadata item:

  • Name
  • Definition
  • References
  • Origin
  • Comments.

These changes could be proposed via any metadata item’s ‘Issues’ tab, with each issue acting as a platform for changes to be proposed, discussed, and consequently approved or closed.

Now, when ‘New Issue’ is selected from the Issues tab, it will open a dropdown containing both the existing ‘New Issue’ option, and the new ‘Propose Change’ option.

Whether you create a new issue that already contains proposed changes via the new ‘Propose Change’ button pictured above, or propose a change to a new or existing issue via the ‘Edit Proposed Changes’ button pictured below…

… You will be brought to the new propose change editor, which contains every field of the standard item editor used elsewhere across the registry!

Every field of the propose change editor can be manipulated as if you were an administrator making direct changes to an item via the editor accessed from the ‘Actions’ dropdown, or creating the item for the first time.

When your proposed changes are saved, they can be viewed via the ‘New Content’ tab, which now lists the fields you proposed changes to, as well as the actual changes you proposed.

If an issue is created via the ‘Propose Change’ button, its title will be a list that reflects the changes proposed when it was created. This can be altered by selecting ‘Edit issue name’.

How do the enhancements benefit users?

The enhancements to change proposals were made to allow users to suggest changes to every element of a metadata item that would have been adjustable when the relevant item was first created.

This means that users who are suggesting changes to an item can suggest changes to every aspect of it, allowing for greater quality assurance, discourse and malleability in your metadata.

As for users who are responsible for reviewing, approving and closing these change requests, they can now do so from the perspective of the same editor that they might have used to create the item initially, or that they would use if they wanted to directly change the item without needing a change to be proposed.

This promotes consistency and familiarity for administrators, making for an overall faster understanding and approval process.

Please note that all previous change request functionality still exists, such as the ability to edit any open change requests, or leave comments on and discuss changes.
